Audeze Mobius headset review

Gaming headsets have been evolving over the past few years. From the mono ear telemarketer style from the 90’s to wireless Bluetooth  headsets, a good headset is a must have. But what if you want more from your gaming headset? What if you could not just hear the action going on, but really feel the emersion, as if you were right there in that same place your character is in, hearing the smallest of sounds? That is what Audeze is offering gamers with the Audeze Mobius Immersive, Cinematic 3D Headphone (Audeze Mobius for short).

The Audeze Mobius is a premium headset that combines comfort and technology that you don’t really see in most gaming headsets. While at first look the Mobius might look like your standard Bluetooth headset, the feel of them when wearing them is very nice. The earpads are comfortable, made with memory foam and can be detached and replaced. There’s enough squeeze when wearing the Mobius that they don’t slide or fall off and nod feel like your head is being squeezed too tight. The left side of the headset houses all of the buttons such as power, sound/mic volume, the 3.5mm Aux port, mic port, USB-C port, and 3D audio (more on 3D audio in a bit). The Mobius is a Bluetooth enabled headset, but if you’re more of the wired type, it comes with a 3.5mm audio cable, a USB- C to USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C cable. Both of the USB cables are braided giving them better protection and longevity. As for the 3.5mm cable, it’s not braided, which is a shame and is the Mobius only flaw.

As I mentioned there is a lot of tech in the Audeze Mobius that you don’t really see in gaming headsets. Planar Magnetic drivers, ACC, LDAC, Waves NX  Head-Tracking and not to mention the 3D audio, all of this packed into the headset. So what does this all mean? Without out getting into too much detail and to keep it simple, planar Magnetic drivers are the internal parts of the headset that, to put it simply, make beat drops crisp, clear and bassy. I’m not an audio techie and there are better ways to explain it, but this is the best that I can put it in simple terms, As for ACC and LDAC these are audio codecs, ACC is for iDevices and LDAC is for Androids.Think of them as the evolved forms of the MP3. As various devices get more advanced the need for higher quality audio and these two codecs provide that. Now for the stars of the Mobius, Waves NX  Head-Tracking and 3D audio.

Now everyone knows what surround sound audio is right? Think of a home theater system with multiple speakers placed in different corners of the room to get the maximum audio coverage. You can’t really do that with a headset, so most headsets simulate that digitally hence digital surround sound. Now with 3D audio not only can you hear everything around you, you can actually hear what direction its coming from. For example, say someone on screen is walking from the left side of a room to the right. With surround sound you can hear the footsteps of that person walking. With 3D audio you also hear the footsteps but you hear them coming as they start from the left, cross into the center and over to the right. This is similar to how we would hear something in real life. As for Waves NX  Head-Tracking, when we track sound, our heads move and turn to find and hear that sound, making so that whatever ear the sound is directed louder in one than in the other. Keeping with the footsteps example, if we hear footsteps coming from behind us, it’s natural to turn our head towards the direction of the footsteps so we can get a better read on where they’re coming from. This is great when playing games like WarZone or Apex Legends where other players can be hiding just off screen. And this is just on default, there are other EQ settings that you can use to further immerse yourself into the game.

The Audeze Mobius headset is one of the most premium headsets that I’ve used so far. From the memory foam ear cups to the 3D audio and head tracking technology packed into it,  the Mobius sounds and feel great. However with premium tech and comfort comes with a price, as the Audeze Mobius headset is priced at $399. If you’re looking to upgrade or looking for a really nice pair of headphones for gaming, the Audeze Mobius headset is a very solid choice.
