Gamer designer type games have been around for years, at least in the PC space. I remember back during the PS1/PS2 days that Agetec used to publish RPG Maker and Fighter Maker and I used to attempt to create my own adventures and fighters. The most popular version of RPG Maker and the one most people know about is the PC version of RPG Maker. For years indie developers have been using RPG Maker to make their own games from simple adventures to visual novels. There have also been some surprise hits made using RPG Maker such as Yume Nikki, To the Moon, and Corpse Party to name a few. Now after 18 years since the console release, RPG Maker is coming back to consoles with RPG Maker MV.
As I mentioned before, RPG Maker MV is a designer game, well more of a software tool set than a game. It allows users to create their own games by using the assets that it offers. New to this version of the game will be a free companion app called RPG Maker MV Player that will allow anyone to play games created from RPG Maker MV without having to own the game itself. RPG Maker MV and the companion app are set to release in 2019 on the Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
