Azure Reflections Nintendo Switch review

One of Nintendo’s current strategies for the Switch is to try to populate its software library with ports of games that were released on other systems and from the Wii/Wii U. And so far it seems to be working, as some of the ports are becoming more popular on the Switch due to its portability. We here on the site have looked at and reviewed some of these ports and turned out liking the Switch versions of the games much more than the original ports. One of these instances of us liking Switch port over the original release is the bullet hell shoot em’ up, Azure Reflections.

For transparency’s sake, I have already reviewed Azure Reflections before on the PS4. You can check out that review right here. I gave the game a score of 7.5 out of 10. For the most part, there is no difference between the Switch version and the PS4 version so it isn’t worth repeating those points. However the Switch version of Azure Reflections will receive a score bump to an 8 out of 10. The reason for the score bump is due to the advantage that the Switch has with its portability. I’ve mentioned a couple of times before, Shmups are my go to games when I wanted a really quick gaming fix that doesn’t involve a long form quest or mission. While the mobile space has a ton of clones of popular shmups and official versions of some shmups, they all fall victim to gatcha mechanics and micro-transactions. Shmups on the Switch, and in this case Azure Reflections, are complete and full games. I can play a couple of minutes at home, take the Switch on the go with me and play while waiting for say a bus or a friend at a restaurant. And given the fact that Azure Reflections is pretty entertaining, being able to play it on the go is a huge plus.

So if you are looking to fill your shmup fix and want something cute as well, or if you already bought Azure Reflections on a different system but would like to be able to play it portability, I highly recommend getting the Switch version of the game.
