It’s been about a year since I reviewed Call of Cthulhu on the PS4. In fact I played it right around this time of year. And yet again thanks to the Old Gods, we will be able to experience the madness on the go with the Nintendo Switch port of Call of Cthulhu. Will we be driven into madness once again or will I just be mad that I wasted space on my Switch. Let’s find out.
Can I play with Madness
Madness on the go- The main selling point of the Switch is being able to take it wherever you go and continue your gaming session on the go. When I was playing Call of Cthulhu last year on the PS4,there where parts of the game when it was getting to the good part or revealing more story elements but then I had to go off and do something. I know I could pause it or suspend the game, but in the case of these kind of adventure/investigation type RPGs there might be information that I will miss out on or forget an important piece of info that could derail the story path I’m on. With the Switch I can be playing in dock mode pause it, undock the tablet portion and keep playing and not miss a thing. Technically this is true for all of the games on the Switch, but Call of Cthulhu is one of those games that I really didn’t want to put down just in case I miss something.
Madness on repeat- As I mentioned. I have played the PS4 version of Call of Cthulhu around this time last year. I called it “a great adaptation of the pen & paper classic”, “made me feel like a detective searching for the truth” and “is a experience you do not want to pass up”. I stand by what I said back then and with regards to the Switch port I still feel the same way (if your curious about what I said about the game last year check out the link above). From its sound design, branching paths, and the insanity mechanic to the feeling like an occult investigator and how the writing feels similar to the tabletop game, the Switch version of Call of Cthulhu much like its PS4 counterpart is a game that needs to be experience, and now can be on the go.
Going insane
Graphical madness- One of the main problems that I had with the game last yearwas that there were minor texture pop ins in various parts of it. That still happens in the Switch version of the game, but now are a bit more noticeable, especially when the game in handheld or tabletop mode. The graphics for the cut-scenes also suffer a bit, again especially when in tabletop/handheld mode. Other than that, most of the time the game looks great.
I still stand with what I said about the game last year: Call of Cthulhu was one of the best horror games last year and is an experience you don’t want to miss. And now that Cthulhu has made the Switch his new home, you can experience the madness on the go now. I am a bit disappointed that even though the things that made the game great have been carried over to the Switch version, the same issues that I had with the game also have been carried over. But just like the PS4 version, the Switch port of the game is not only an experience you don’t want to pass up but also one you can take on the go. If you’re look to expand the horror on the Switch and don’t mind going insane to a squid god thing, then give the game a pick up. Cthulhu commands you.
