Scarlett Johansson picked for lead role in live action Ghost in the Shell movie

Most anime fans, along with gamers, know that when Hollywood studios get their hands on their favorite series that there is a very high probability that they will screw it up, especially when it comes to adapting foreign media for a western market.

Over the past few years after the terrible Dragon Ball live action, there have been talks about various studios buying up movie rights to various anime shows, such as Bubble Gum Crisis, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell. Now speaking of GITS DreamWorks pictures, thanks to co-founder Steven Spielberg’s interest in the story, not only have secured the movie rights to the anime but also have signed Scarlett Johansson as the lead character Major Molotov Kusanagi.

While I do understand many will doom the movie to fail and even before it has even been greenlit, I think that they made a really good choice in getting Scarlett Johansson as the Major. She’s done a great job in bringing to life the Black Widow in the Marvel movies and was really awesome in Lucy. Again it’s way, way to early to tell since the movie has not been greenlited but it’s a pretty good start.
